Celebrating a local therapist’s journey of compassion, connection, and community impact in Land O’ Lakes and beyond.
If you’ve ever been in an intake session with me, you know self-care almost always comes up in our conversations. But here’s something I notice often, so many people don’t realize that the small, everyday things they already do for themselves are actually self-care.
Self-care doesn’t have to mean expensive spa days, elaborate trips, or fancy wellness retreats (though those can be great, too!). Sometimes, the simplest activities, the ones that ground you and bring you joy, are the most powerful.
For me, one of my favorite self-care practices is reading. It’s not just relaxing, research shows that reading can reduce stress levels by up to 68%, improve sleep, and even boost empathy. And the best part? It’s accessible to almost everyone. You just need a book and a little time to yourself.
Over the years, I’ve found books to be an incredible tool in my own mental health journey, and many of my clients have shared the same. So, I wanted to pass along some recommendations from both myself and clients (past and present) who’ve found these reads inspiring, healing, or just plain uplifting.
🌟 Marissa’s Picks
The Let Them Theory – Mel Robbins This self-help gem is all about letting go of the urge to control everyone and everything. With a simple (but powerful) mindset shift, Robbins offers a refreshing reminder that peace often comes from stepping back, not leaning in harder.
Attached – Amir Levine Ever wondered why you react a certain way in relationships? This book breaks down attachment styles in a way that’s easy to understand and full of practical tips for creating healthier connections. It’s part self-awareness, part action plan.
The Pivot Year – Brianna Wiest A unique book with one page for each day of the year, each page offering something to think about, reflect on, or carry with you. Many of these daily thoughts have been so impactful that I’ve found myself sharing them with friends and clients alike.
Whether you’re a teen navigating school stress, a young adult figuring out your place in the world, or a parent balancing countless responsibilities, reading can be your quiet form of resistance against burnout.
So, here’s your gentle challenge: Pick one of these books, carve out 10 minutes a day, and see how it shifts your perspective over the next month.
