Why speaking up matters for teen and young adult mental health in our community.
September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, breaking the stigma, and reminding teens and young adults that talking about suicide can save lives.
As a teen and young adult therapist in Land O’ Lakes, FL, I know how important it is to create safe spaces where difficult conversations can happen. Silence can be dangerous—but speaking up offers hope and connection.
🧠 Why Talking About Suicide Matters
According to the CDC, suicide is one of the leading causes of death among 10–24 year olds. Many people worry that bringing up the topic of suicide will "put the idea" in someone’s head—but that’s a harmful myth.
In reality, open and honest conversations can:
Help those struggling feel less alone
Reduce shame and stigma
Encourage teens and young adults to seek help
You don’t have to be a professional to make a difference. Sometimes simply asking, “Are you okay?” can be the first step in a life-saving conversation.
How to Support Someone Who Might Be Struggling
If you’re concerned about a friend, classmate, or loved one, here are some simple but powerful steps:
Ask directly: “Are you thinking about hurting or harming yourself?”
Listen without judgment – let them know their feelings are valid
Avoid minimizing their pain (“You’ll be fine” or “It’s not that bad” can feel dismissive)
Encourage professional help – a therapist, counselor, or doctor can provide support
Check in regularly – consistency shows you care
These actions can create connection and hope, especially for teens and young adults who may feel isolated.
If You’re Struggling, You’re Not Alone
You are not weak. You are not a burden. And you do not have to face this alone.
